Being Prince II

Prince has a new triple-album release of some 30 songs, Lotusflow3r. I heard a few cuts today on NPR's Fresh Air.

The songs were fantastic! I will soon purchase it. He's pure genius.

I am not a fan. But, this line from you - "The songs were fantastic!"

Well, it makes me think I must give it a listen.

Cheers!!!

Hee hee... Prince is the only person I’ve ever seen at a concert – that was when I was studying for my first degree in Virginia (although, perhaps the concert was in Maryland at the time). He was brilliant in concert... ‘pure genius’!

Brosreview - Oh, my!!!! How can you not be a fan? Serious? Is it the genre? You are a musician, no? What is it that you don't appreciate? Can you at least agree that he is a pure genius? You review music, no? Oh, my!!!! As you can see by my questions, I'm devastated! :-)

CathM - When I was in college Purple Rain was released. It was huge! In fact, my boyfriend at the time seemed to love Prince more than me. I was a bit jealous. We broke up a few years later but remain good friends to this day. His love for Prince has waned though he still very much appreciates his genius.

I have never seen Prince in concert, but maybe I'll go hear him when he launches a US tour. While his music still rocks, it seems to be a bit more laid back. Perhaps it has something to do with his conversion in 2001 to the Jehovah Witness faith. The reviewer of the NPR segment said that the lyrics on this release are also softer. Some of lyrics I have never been into. But his music has always rocked!

Great picture of Prince. He is an amazing artist. So unique, so versatile. I'm interested in hearing his new songs!

Hey, how can you not like an artist who changes his name to a symbol. Purple Rain was the best in part because Morris Day and Jerome...Wonder if I can get a gig dancing and holding a mirror?

Judith Ellis said...

Yeah, Dave, Morris Day and the Time! Cool! I don't think Morris or Jerome played on this release. But the cuts I heard today are way rocking with a heavy funk. There are also some traditional soft rock pieces too. As for your dancing gig, I think you got it in you! Go for it! Just please save a dance for me. :-)

Anything for "Auntie" Judith...my favorite! Will definitely check out the CD...

You're a favorite too, Dave! I'm smiling aloud.

Umm, I like some of his songs. Still, I am not a fan. Yea, Judith, haha, you got me there. It might be the genre.

But, yes, no denying, he is a pure genius.

Cheers!!!

Hey Ajey! I was just teasing a bit, really! :-)

Regarding genres, I like ALL kinds! I think you might too.

Cheers, my friend!

Dave - Regarding the symbol, please check out my first post on Prince, Being Prince. There I wrote "There is no original. I am pure variance," relating to his music and image.

Judith,

Loved the piece. Original suggests sameness. Variance is fluidity, change, renewal. The brand...confident individualism!

YES!

I didn't know, Judith, that you liked Prince all that much!

Never been much of a fan myself, but do like certain songs of his, such as "Money Don't Matter," off his '92 "Diamonds and Pearls" LP.

I love "When Doves Cry." The song of Summer '84. I can still see myself, Cynthia, Karla, and Damon going nuts over that one, esp. the line that goes, "Animals striking curious poses!"
